Wall Street, PTC 2008, High Surf and Trans-Pacific Internet

Buckle your seat belts, it could be a bumpy ride on Wall Street this week. No fewer than four giant financial companies report earnings and losses this week, including JP Morgan Chase and Merrill Lynch. New York media think Merrill Lynch will write off another 15 billion dollars -- and this morning CNBC says Citicorp will write down 24 billion. That's big money even on Wall Street! The Pacific Telecommunications Council annual conference is underway at Hilton Hawaiian Village. Telecoms executives from around the world convene here every January to discuss the future and make announcements. One of those announcements is a new fiberoptic network coming to Hawaii. I'll have details later in this half hour. High surf has meant high economic times for the top side of Oahu. I went to the North Shore yesterday morning to check things out and saw busy restaurants and shops.

Pets' diet, weight is largely up to owners

Unfortunately for those of us living domesticated lives, weight is no laughing matter. As more Americans struggle with obesity, there's an unsurprising result for the pets sitting on the couch with us: About a third of American pets are overweight, according to some studies.

"Sadly, our companion animals reflect our lifestyle. If you're sedentary, there's a pretty good chance your dog is sedentary, too," Fitzgerald says.

Carrying too much weight affects nearly every system of the body - joints, heart, respiratory system, even skin - as well as your pet's life span. The good news is that, unlike other health issues, here you can make a difference.

For pets and people, the solution is simple, if not easy: Burn more, eat less. Fortunately, your dog or cat can't work the can opener; you're in control.

Intel's OLPC moves blighted by the old paranoia

Please stop playing stupid power games with OLPC, you are only hurting those in need. It is borderline disgusting to see your little tantrums hurt those who can't defend themselves. Just shut up, put your heads down and do better.

Your quitting of OLPC in a huff is downright stupid. I have used both the Classmate and the OLPC, and from just about every way I view it, the OLPC is a clear winner. This is not to say that a lot of Intel engineers didn't do well with Classmate - and all of those I talk to believe in the mission - but you are slapping them in the face by using them as a weapon.

The OLPC project is not about raking in money or cut-throat competition, it is about getting those without connectivity an entry into the digital world. It is about empowering those without power.

Will EU Privacy Decision Help U.S. Downloaders?

But we believe this is a clear statement about the need to safeguard privacy for Internet users and to make clear that there is no obligation in European community law to require retention or disclosure of records concerning those who may have violated copyright law."

Not surprisingly, representatives of the music industry offered a different spin on the court's decision. John Kennedy, chairman and CEO of IFPI, an international music rights group, said the court's decision underscored the need for tools to fight online piracy.

"The judgment," Kennedy said, "means that music-rights owners can still take actions to enforce their civil rights, and it has sent out a clear signal that [European countries] have to get the right balance between privacy and enforcement of intellectual property rights and that intellectual property rights can neither be ignored nor neglected."

Impact on the United States?

Despite the fact that the Internet is a global resource, the court decision does not have any direct effect on U.S.

Eight-theater Oceanfront movie complex is closed

The coming attractions are gone from Surf-N-Sand Movies.

The eight-theater complex near the Oceanfront closed this week.

Its phone number is disconnected. One side of its marquee on Laskin Road reads: "Thank you customers for 20 years of loyal support."

"I saw a U-Haul come by and take all the posters down" Saturday night, said Robert Paulsen, who works at The Purple Cow restaurant next door. Kendall Hunt, the restaurant's general manager, said he noticed Monday that the theater had closed.

The building, near Birdneck Road, carries the insignia of R/C Theatres, a management company based in Maryland. A woman who answered the phone at the company's office Thursday said no one there could comment on the status of Surf-N-Sand.

In June, a federal judge in Norfolk ruled that the theater's owner, Laskin Road Associates LP, could evict the tenant, Capitol Industries, and collect unpaid rent and property taxes totaling nearly $250,000.
