| Fisherman reported missing at Pago Bay
The U.S. Coast Guard was called to respond to a report of a missing fisherman in the waters off Pago Bay. According to the Lieutenant Lee Putnam, seas were breaking at about six and a half feet, noting that Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 was dispatched and conducted an aerial search of the area. Rescue personnel and medics from the Guam Fire Department also rushed to the scene.GFD spokesperson Angel Llagas told KUAM News that a report came into the island's 911 emergency service at around 5:20 Tuesday afternoon, as a man reported that he was fishing with his friend, and the latter had gone missing. While he made it to shore, the man noticed his friend was standing on the reef and then disappeared into the water. For the time being the National Weather Service has issued a high-surf advisory as well as a small craft advisory to remain in effect until Wednesday.
Teen swept off Mugu Rock into sea
VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - The search will resume Sunday for a 17-year-old boy swept off Mugu Rock by a wave into the ocean. Officials say the Oxnard teen's family watched him disappear into the water while he was fishing just before noon on Saturday. Divers, lifeguards and Coast Guard personnel searched for the boy, but were eventually forced to stop because of high surf. The surf was reportedly 6 to 8 feet high. Fish Bums trying to reel in moviegoers
BEND, Ore. -- The Fly Fishing Film Tour is trying to hook a larger audience in Central Oregon. The tour, put on by the Angling Exploration Group, includes seven fly-fishing movies ranging from 10 minutes to 20 minutes in length, and a portion of "Fish Bums I: Mongolia." Thad Robison, 39, the tour manager and one of the Fish Bums, said the Fish Bum film and the seven others are quite different from the matter-of-fact instructional videos standard in the sport. "We're trying to be more progressive in film style. It's kind of like an Endless Summer-type feeling -- like a video journal of crazy stuff that happens," he said, referring to the influential surfing movie. "The video is more about the whole experience.
Pursuing the great speckled trout
I thought tarpon fishermen were super secretive. And red drum fishermen were tight-lipped. But I believe speckled trout fishermen are the most clandestine. Last week when I went speckled trout fishing on the Eastern Shore, my host said, “No story. We keep this to ourselves." Speckled trout long have been a favorite of anglers who live within the scent of saltwater. I recall the excitement of catching bluefish in the surf of the Outer Banks in the 60s and 70s, but my guide would curse the blues because, as he claimed, they had chased off all the specks. Why are speckled trout held in such high esteem? They are a beautiful fish, with the looks of trout you find in the mountains. They readily strike artificial lures, the Mirrorlure being a traditional favorite.
Mid-December Fisheries Memo
Port Alexander, Alaska. Notice the haze from the surf out at Cape Ommaney, the bottom tip of Baranof Island. The sport fishing here is a closely guarded secret. Oops. Maybe the thousands of fishermen on the East coast and growing numbers on the Pacific coast, that have signed the petition, in hard copy and on-line, have struck a nerve. The Director of the National Marine Fisheries Service, Bill Hogarth just quit. U.S. fishermen are proposing to take NMFS to Congress, unlike the Canadian halibut fishermen who are taking their Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans to a court of law. "John, Am anxious to see if King runs rebound, Chigniks' run was acceptable but not great. Many places had none at all. Seems obvious that the harder they fish for less pollack the more kings they will intercept." I hear this a lot these days.
Arizona's first Margaritaville opens in Glendale
Jimmy Buffett's first Margaritaville Caf in Arizona officially opened today in true Parrothead fashion, with Pink Cadillac Margaritas, Volcano Nachos, clowns on stilts and colorfully dressed employees dancing to It's Five O'clock Somewhere. Developers, local dignitaries and members of the media gathered to welcome the latest addition to Westgate City Center, the Glendale entertainment and dining district at Loop 101 and Glendale Avenue. The two-story 20,000-square-foot restaurant features three bars, an airplane hanging from the ceiling, fishing boat booths and a gift shop. It sells everything from shirts and sandals to mini surf boards. .
Northeaster may interrupt good weekend fishing
This weekend's weather outlook predicts another northeaster. But as good as the fishing's been, those anglers wanting to fish backwater should find excellent fishing, especially with the coming cool weather. A low tide arriving at midday will leave anglers with a morning high tide, also excellent for anyone wishing to throw a topwater plug for gator trout. If the surf doesn't get too rough, anglers can expect excellent catches of bull whiting, pompano, summer trout or anything else that cruises our local beaches. The best baits would include fresh shrimp, cut mullet and clam. For those anglers wishing to fish the George Crady Bridge or Fort Clinch pier, the sheepshead fishing has turned on, along with puppy drum, redfish, speckled trout and flounder. Just this past week, Joe Graves of Amelia Island caught a humongous doormat flounder on live shrimp fishing the Nassau River.

The Hawaii Superferry once again canceled all trips on Wednesday, for the fourth day in a row, due to severe high seas. Trips were canceled since Sunday because of the rough waters.
