| Mid-December Fisheries Memo
Port Alexander, Alaska. Notice the haze from the surf out at Cape Ommaney, the bottom tip of Baranof Island. The sport fishing here is a closely guarded secret. Oops. Maybe the thousands of fishermen on the East coast and growing numbers on the Pacific coast, that have signed the petition, in hard copy and on-line, have struck a nerve. The Director of the National Marine Fisheries Service, Bill Hogarth just quit. U.S. fishermen are proposing to take NMFS to Congress, unlike the Canadian halibut fishermen who are taking their Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans to a court of law. "John, Am anxious to see if King runs rebound, Chigniks' run was acceptable but not great. Many places had none at all. Seems obvious that the harder they fish for less pollack the more kings they will intercept." I hear this a lot these days.
Study finds children plagued by unwanted exposure to porn
NASHVILLE, Tenn. Peddlers of online pornography are stalking children with images of naked people and people having sex, according to a new study that found an increased number of children and teenagers being exposed to unsolicited pornography on the Internet. The study, which appeared in the February issue of the journal Pediatrics, found that 42 percent of Internet users ages 10 to 17 said they had seen pornography online during the past year, with 66 percent of those saying they had not sought out the images. Overall, 34 percent of minors responding to a telephone survey of 1,500 Internet users ages 10 to 17 said they had experienced unwanted exposure to online pornography. "More research concerning the potential impact of Internet pornography on youth is warranted, given the high rate of exposure, the fact that much exposure is unwanted, and the fact that youth with certain vulnerabilities, such as depression, interpersonal victimization, and delinquent tendencies, have more exposure," the journal noted.

Review: Ocean Club gets the details right
Here's a little detail that can sometimes be an indicator of the quality of a restaurant. The next time you're dining out, and you and your companion order different entrées, check out the accompanying side items. More likely than not, the sides will be the same whether you've ordered steak or fish -- maybe potatoes or rice and a medley of vegetables. That each diner receives the same side item is not an indication of a bad restaurant, especially if those side items are good. But when a restaurant goes to the trouble to pair each entrée with a specific vegetable, it can be an indication that somebody cares enough to pay attention to the little things. That was one of the things I noticed while dining at Ocean Club, a small and casual seafooder in New Smyrna Beach from the same people who own Spanish River Grill just down the road.
