Balshaw brushes aside the opinion of strangers and goes back to basics

You turn up on the day and in the back of your mind there are doubts." England supporters tend to feel much the same way when they approach the stadium and purchase a programme with Balshaw's name in it.

The Balshaw preparing to face Wales, however, is a more mature athlete who insists he no longer takes the opinions of strangers as a personal insult. "When I was a bit younger I'd think that and want to prove all the buggers wrong. Now I've stopped worrying about influences on the outside. I've just worked on the basics of my game and, off the back of that, things happen. I don't see I've got anything to prove.

"I think I've got a few more years in me and I want to be the full-back for England. There's a lot of very good competition but I'm going to give it everything."

He even has an interesting theory as to why England have not scored many tries lately.

Images: Storm Churns Up Massive Waves

The storm system that brought rain and snow across Southern California also churned up the surf south of the border. One of the surfers captured video while surfing 12 miles off the coast of Ensenada, Mexico.

The photographer and his friends launched their jet skis at 5 a.m. and said they used GPS to find their way in the dark.

Some of the monstrous waves they encountered were reported to be 40 feet tall.

The waves were so massive that Mexican officials shut down harbors in the area. .

DVD picks: 'King of Kong,' 'El Cid' jump to DVD

Big-screen epic or close-up documentary? It's a good week for either, in the form of "El Cid" in the first case or "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters" in the second."The King of Kong" (New Line, $27.95) is an acclaimed documentary as addictive as an old "Centipede" game. It's about the world of classic arcade-game players, especially the longtime "Donkey Kong" champion Billy Mitchell and his upstart challenger, Steve Wiebe. The documentary follows Wiebe's attempt to be recognized by the insular arcade-game establishment and to beat Mitchell's long-standing record for the best "Donkey Kong" score. While you may chuckle over the idea of, well, an arcade-game establishment, the film demonstrates that this world is no different from any other where the old guard reigns and outsiders are unwelcome.

You're right, we are a backwater - SA

However an Adelaide Advertiser online poll shows most agree with Mr Brumby.

More than 60 per cent of more than 2500 respondents to the poll agreed with the Victorian Premier.

Asked the question: Is Adelaide a backwater, 48 per cent of respondents voted: "Yes - we lag behind the eastern states''.

A further 16 per cent voted: "Yes - but that's part of the appeal''.

Some 27 per cent of people voted: "No - Brumby is a jerk''; while a further 7 per cent said: "No - look at how many major events are on at this time of year''.

Mr Brumby said yesterday Victoria would end up as a "backwater'' like Adelaide if it didn't proceed with channel-deepening in Port Phillip Bay.

Wave window is open for Maverick's surf contest in Half Moon Bay

Flea, Skindog, Twiggy and the rest are on standby.

So are the fans, the cops and the environmentalists. A VIP party is planned, licensed apparel is available and a television deal is in the works. Tickets are on sale.

All we need is for that fickle special guest to arrive - swell swells.

The Maverick's Surf Contest kicks off Friday, but don't head for Half Moon Bay just yet. All that's happened is that the contest window has officially opened, and now director Jeff Clark will bury his head in satellite readings, storm charts and buoy counts in hopes that something wicked will come this way from the Gulf of Alaska.

If suitably tasty waves roll in before the end of March, Clark will start making phone calls. He must give surfers at least 24 hours to gear up and paddle out to Maverick's, off Pillar Point, where they will see who can best turn big danger into high style.

Monday wild card

I'm helping my wife's sister and her husband from Big Sur, Calif., move into their Post Falls home this afternoon. When they pull in around noon tomorrow, they'll make Nos. 16 & 17 members of my extended family who'll be in North Idaho. I'm excited. But enough of me. You can start your own threads with this Wild Card ...
